Discussion 4: What can you learn from this example? July 19

Here are the notes on Julius Caesar by your classmate Nick (thank you, Nick.)
I haven't gone through all the assignments yet, so there may more that are just as good.
I am posting them here for you to comment on what you can learn from them.

  1. I find bulleted list formatting very helpful and I always use it for taking written notes. It can help organize and emphasize information quickly and effectively. Nick also wrote down very detailed summary which helped to point out every small part from the film. Thank you, Nick.

    2. Thank you for bringing up the fact that bullet points can help to emphasize information quickly and effectively. This is very true!

I also use the bulleted method of taking notes. I had more detailed notes (many pages). I am a very detailed notetaker. I can learn from Nick's brevity. It will save me a lot of work to summarize scenes in the future.

    1. I also take very through notes but never realized that sometimes they can turn out to be pages long also! I'll also try out Nick's bullet points to shorten my note length hopefully it helps with summarization also!

  3. Unlike the example, I did not use bullet point format for my notetaking; as a result, they were somewhat confusing.

For the next assignment, I will implement the bullet points format as I think it will keep my notes short, well written and as precise as the example. This will make it easier to read.

    1. Hi Melissa,
I find it brave of you to change your method of note taking. I believe that using bullet points while taking notes is really helpful. I agree that they make notes shorter, clear, and precise. Good luck on your next assignment.

  4. I never use a bullet point system for note-taking. I use a similar method but my notes are more substantial. I like to take fewer notes and feel that bullet points are sometimes to much to review later on and having the fewer longer notes makes it easier to review when needed. However, I will give bullet-point a try on the next note-taking assignment to see if it really is better/worse than my current method of block notes since Nick's notes were still easy and clear when reviewing!

    1. Hi Crystal, I like your idea of using the block notes method. I did some research on it after reading your comment. It seems to be a good method for recalling information.

I will try this next time. Thanks.

    2. I appreciate that there is some possible benefit to taking notes in ways other than bullet points. Normally my notes are stream of consciousness, and I find that simply writing them ingrains more information in my brain.

  5. Wow this Nick guy seems like a stand up guy. His bullet points are so masterful. I need to be more like Nick.

  6. What I like about Nick's notes is that they are brief, clear, and concise. I also find bullet points helpful in keeping track of the notes I take. For my future assignments I want to work on making my notes a little more well written.

  7. I like his method, I also use this method, but he wrote more details than me.It is worth learning.

  8. In comparison, my notes were far longer. I did not use bullet points and this choice made them not as clear as Nick's. I liked how Nick's sentences mostly contained verbs and so it was easy to follow as a cause and effect journey. I believe I could combine and edit many of my ideas to capture the essence more precisely.

  9. I like the way Nick takes notes because I would do it the same way. The notes are not detailed but important points that happened in the film. It is easy to understand when you have to read them again.

    1. I agree as I myself looked for major events only, rather than take notes on small details.

  10. For this specific task, I tried to take bullet point notes, but Nick’s notes are more structured. Every part of the movie is covered, and notes consist of both plot summary and personal notes and opinions. Mine notes were more about the plot, then about my personal perspective on it.
I really like the structure of these note, so I will try to make my notes and consistent as Nick’s. Also, I should learn from Nick’s summarizing skills. Although, each bullet point is a short sentence, it summarizes the main ideas of the film.

  11. It does seem to be more to the point than my notes. I think when I took notes, I tended to focus on major events. I think the takeaway for me is to not just look for major events, but rather pay attention to small, but vital details.
