Something like this?

What's good and what's bad about a preview like this?

  1. I find reading text on video difficult because I often find myself pausing to read it or copy the information to my notes, and I am taken out of the words that I’m listening to. It would be helpful to me to have text simultaneously read aloud when it is presented on a video. I enjoy when the artwork is presented for sustained periods of time because then I can gaze into it and it brings the words of the lecture alive in my imagination. For the most part I enjoyed having this information in hindsight after watching the film. I did learn additional information, facts, history, and different plot line motifs from it.

  3. Since this information is new to me, it can be a little difficult to follow, and I find myself pausing at certain types to think of certain statements made during the video.

  5. I feel this was a very good preview for the lesson and it got me very excited for what’s ahead. I would like to learn more about Umberto Eco as I am interested in his love for conspiracy theories and his writings about pop culture. I was also very interested in hearing the meaning of the book I’ll Nome Della Rosa.

  6. The good is that the video provides very detailed background information that is helpful to understanding the Name of the Rose. The bad is that it provides some spoilers, for example, the reason for Bernardo's visit to the abbey is revealed. Therefore, if one views this video before watching the movie, they would have already known about specific key pieces of information.

I liked how the lecture touched on the Library of Babylon, and "a secret which will never be revealed" because it doesn't exist. Also, I enjoyed the references to Astronomy and Astrology and the effect the stars had on scientific explanation--considered heresy by the church because it clashed with Scripture.

  8. I like the video because i can understand it and easy for me to follow. I really like how each character was introduced so I know who's who in the movie. When I was watching the movie I was confused and trying hard to understand their language to figure out who is who. I had to do some research for pictures of the actors in the movie.

  9. I enjoy the video lectures because it gives reference on what to expect and be on the look out for in the video to come. For example, historical events and characters mentioned in the videos can give you an idea of what else was going on in this time period. Making personal references is always beneficial as it gives great insight into the mind and perspectives of the characters. Also, idealogical or informational details that help better understand the video as a whole is very helpful. For example when we watched DeCameron we jumped straight into all episodes of the film but afterwards had a short lecture about the meaning of the episodes and the characters and gained valuable insight that would've been helpful to identify while we were watching the film. Such as learning most characters in DeCameron were normal people from the street to help convey the simplicity of the film would have been great to know going into the film. So personally I enjoy the video lectures they give great detail and meaning to the material.

  10. I think, that video lectures are very informative and help to visualize information. My opinion, that pictures alongside help to remember and reference lecture material better. That video helped me to understand The Name of the Rose better, since I was not familiar with ideology and main religious and political ideas of that time. Vides help to piece together movies, assignments and self reflection questions together.

  11. The video lecture was informative and very helpful in understanding more depth about The Name of the Rose. If I watched this video before watching the film, I will probably have a different point of view. I would prefer these video lecture over the actual film in this case.
