Discussion 20 About the Renaissance (from a student) Aug 10

This passage is pervaded with a sense of intellectual humility. It reveals how Rina
truly arrived at an understanding and, consequently, a sense of marvel at what s/he learned.

I find the subdued tone perfectly aligned with the content.

Thank you, Rina, for sharing it.

History of ideas - The Renaissance

This a video lecture, that provides an overview of Renaissance, the reasons it started and how it impacted the world. It briefly states the purpose of studying history in general and Renaissance in particular and provides description of key ideas of that era.

Information in this video lecture is an historical overview of the Renaissance with respect of modern reality. It tells a story of how art   was created and knowledge was acquired. It draws parallel with today’s reality, for example, when the wealth of the Medici family was compared to what Forbes’ list members have nowadays. To me, the first thing, that caught my attention, was the phrase, that the purpose of studying history is to use the lost and forgotten knowledge and ideas in today’s world. It is exactly what Renaissance is about. It was an era of going back to the values of ancient Greece and Rome. To me, that knowledge means, that looking back and analyzing the past is valuable. Sometimes people need to look back to move forward. Now, when I studied some history of Renaissance, I feel like studying history makes more sense to me. I think, that knowledge makes me more respectful of the past and makes me want to reexamine some of the things I learned, and look for inspiration in the past.

  1. Hey Rina,

I agree with your explanation of what the purpose of the video was. It was challenging us to accept that the Renaissance was about a period of reflection and revelation by studying pre-existing societies. Acknowledging the simplicity and harmonious environments that these societies lived by in order to achieve a more relevant replication of that way of life. The video gave great comparative examples, as you mentioned, the Medici family relative to Forbes richest people. I also expressed this profound clarification of this time period and also adopted the notion that we should take moments to reflect on what made the societies before us so successful.

    Rina,
Your synthesis of past and future were very well written. Drawing the value of history into the way the Renaissance exposed lost knowledge of Greece and Rome was on point. Its amazing how history repeats itself and how it is so important to analyze events to avoid recurrence of the "Dark Ages". Great job!

  3. History definitely repeats itself and I agree that its important to learn as much as we can from previous societies! Learning and growing from what generations new before us and built upon. We are still exploring the lost ideas of philosophers, mathematicians, and artists such as Leonardo and learning from what they were experiencing during their time.

    1. I agree that we are still exploring and learning from the lost ideas of Philosophers and Mathematicians like Leonardo. However, I think that our society needs to be reminded of the critical things that we need to pay attention. Most people today are just too obsessed with reality tv and the like.

  5. I'm in the same boat, Rina, in terms of history making more sense to me now having studied it through the lens of the Renaissance. Whereas before, I was trying to keep dates, facts, names, and countries all in my head, I now examine it through our human backstory and how we ended up making the choices we did and the reasons for them.

    1. Personally, I find historical events interesting because I think it's fascinating to know what happened before I was put on the Earth but now looking at things like you and Rina, it adds another layer of examining history and giving me even more to think about

  6. Kathryn,
I can say I am more a concrete thinker than a philosophical thinker. I also tend to look at dates, places and occurrences instead of looking at the bigger picture and applying it to my life.

  7. Hi Rina,
I like how you mentioned that the video draws parallels with modern times. I think one of the best ways to understand history is to apply it to a modern day scenario to show people what it was really like and how people really may have felt at the time.

  8. Rina,

That line "Sometimes people need to look back to move forward" reminds of me a line that someone I knew used to say: "We need to know where we come from in order to know where we have to go". I couldn't have said it better myself. The introduction of this video talked about how a lot of people would learn from the Renaissance and use that knowledge in the present. It's indeed fascinating how ideals from centuries ago influences the present.

  9. I find what Rina says to be true especially finding inspiration in the past. Learning about Bacciolini scouring Europe to find ancient texts that could be used to learn philosophies that could be applied in the era of the Rennaisance like On the Nature of Things by Epicurus inspired me to read more philosophy that I can apply to my life. It's fascinating that someone's ideas thousands of years ago can teach me and help me improve my life today.

  10. Your made great points about Renaissance. And what I think about the video is that it brings me a new view point. I was surprising informed that Renaissance was supported by the rich. I never thought about this before.

  11. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Rina. I agreed that history isn’t just something to remember for an exam or passing the citizenship anymore. There is more meaning behind the different period of the history, especially the Renaissance.

    1. I agree that history is much more than just art, but rather a picture of progression.

  13. I think that Rina explains well that the Renaissance is more than just art, but rather how it has impacted the world. Art explains in drawing of the human emotion at a specific period of time. It is a cultivation of human prosperity and also human suffering, but also progression. The Renaissance is a time of progression of human advances and should not be seen as anything less.
