The assignment required you to search for a video online that discussed some particular topic related to the Dark Ages.

I hope you didn't all choose religion as a theme.

This video speaks of the ways a man or boy could enter the life as a monk in a Monastery, and their daily schedule/duties and craftsman abilities. Some new information I learned was that monks created a sign language for themselves, and that monks were originally the first nurses before women (nuns) were allowed to do that job.
This video had a corny presentation, but at the end it started to go into the warrior monks, or Templars, that were to capture the holy land from the Muslim rulers which was new and interesting to me. I’d always seen these uniforms with the red cross on them, but had never known what they were before now.

I think it interesting that monks were the first nurses. It really didn't surprise me, given the hierarchy of men and women in history. Women were not seen as worthy to anything (important) other than bare children. Even in the Mithras video, it spoke of it being the religion for "men to look inward" whereas Christianity was the religion of all: the poor, downtrodden, and women.

  2. Because of the downfall of Rome and total collapse of civilization of the Dark Ages, communes and monasteries developed. These were created for those who preached for peace and tolerance in the world. The San Franciscan Order of Assisi and the Dominicans, in addition to the Church, preserved the culture of early Greece and Rome through illustrated manuscripts. Because of these, history, literature, poetry and philosophies of the early Greeks and Romans would have been lost. It was impressive that they recognized the important contributions Greeks and Romans made.

Sorry, I had more to say...
    Thomas Aquinas (part 1) https://youtu.be/xri0AMiAKIo

My video was on the life of Thomas Aquinas. He was a theologian from the Dominican Order. Despite living until the age of 49, Thomas of Aquinas became known as the most prolific theologian, the most important and influential figure into the modern era. Using Aristotle’s philosophy of knowledge as a basis, Thomas developed of new insights into Christianity--the power of grace and faith giving believers the ability to grasp the extent and miracle of Jesus Christ. He developed the phrase: “Grace perfects Nature”.

  4. After watching the lecture on the Dark Ages, I found a video that discusses the History of Sex in the Dark Ages.
The church’s view of sex is something new to me because I never thought about the issue from a different perspective. It seems that man, not God makes and breaks the rules surrounding sex, sexuality, and marriage.
The Church during this era provides conflicting views about its beliefs concerning sexuality and celibacy. During the middle ages, it reaches a compromise on the question of marriage and sex stating that men and women could have intimate relations within the confines of marriage but only to procreate. However, St. Augustin who was one of the founding fathers of the Christian church said that marriage is legitimate within the Christian community not just for raising children (hence, not only to procreate) but also for friendship between the husband and wife.

These ideas seem to have come about due to fear. The conflicting rules about what is right and wrong about sex and sexuality is interesting because society (ex. LBGT) is still dealing with the repercussions of this school of thought today.

    1. Hey Melissa,

This was a great topic! Very interesting to consider the shift in dynamics over the topic of sex. Many religious scholars in Islam also argue over whether the purpose of sex is strictly to procreate or to build a loving relationship between husband and wife. I think indefinitely society will be in a hasty battle between the construct of a sexual relationship between man and woman but its still interesting to think about how the conservative the conversation would have sounded in the dark ages.

    2. Hi Melissa, I want to add on to what you've said. In the movie The name of the Rose, only men were part of the church. There was no woman in sit.

This video is called illuminations treasures of Middle Ages BBC. If you're like me that loves to watch videos about art and/or handmake things then this video is worth to watch. It talks about how the Roman uses illuminated manuscripts. All the of the drawing in the books are drawn by hand and real materials such as gold. Back in time people used to document on stones and clay then they changed it to animal skins.
The video also mentioned the reason why they used drawing it's because people didn't know how to read but would understand picutres better. The manuscripts preserved the ideas of religious beliefs and many mysteries of the Medieval age.

    1. Hi Peiling, I find it interesting that the reason they used drawings to communicate is because they did not know how to read. This is not surprising, but it was something I hadn't thought about before.

My topic is about Europe after the fall of Rome. All kind of different tribes wanted to own the territory and it was easier to do so by attacking it. In nearly a millennium, the city of Rome was in the hands of someone other than the Romans. Europe was divided into kingdoms and each of these new kingdoms built on, transformed, neglected, or destroyed the political legacy of the Roman Empire in its own distinct ways.

This video is from a college lecture at Yale about an individual named Charlemange who was arguably a founder of Europe as a political and cultural center of the world at the time. The video follows of the phases of the Roman Empire through a specific dynasty in which Charlemange was alive and trying to revive the Roman Empire. The video demonstrates the agility of Charlemange who was crowed emperor in 800 by the Pope and began his movement to reestablish the Roman Empire. One of the most interesting things I had learned was that Charlemange and his family actually built there wealth in what is now divided into France and Belgium. In this region they were a wealthy and noble family called Maoirs which translates to mayor. Different from our meaning mayor in this time was meant as a military leader. Most interesting was that the Maoirs slaves were landowners and were also very powerful. Since the slaves were also landowners they were more powerful than the king at the time. That was one of the more interesting points of conversation during this lecture.

    1. This talk of Charlemagne brings to my memory the musical "Pippin" which is about the King's family and his reign, but mostly his son. I'm curious to go back and compare the historical facts because the show covered vast collage of moments in history.

The video displays two crucial occurrences in the Roman Empire during the fifth century. These are the collapse of the Western wing as a political entity and the survival of the Eastern part. According to the video, the West’s fall is blamed on outside pressure of conquests. Moreover, apart from figuring the reasons why the West fall, it look into the invaders and determine whether the revolution mark a gradual shift or whether it should be regarded as cataclysmic end of civilization. The piece’s main argument is that the period before the year 1000 marked the end of a specific civilization as opposed to an end of civilization.

    1. I love the DaVinci Code!! It poked fun at so much history and its controversies. So many theories on the past. I believe there was a sequel to the movie (Inferno) with Tom Hanks. It wasn't interesting however

Interesting to see how the Romans actually changed history in terms of changing what actually was written in the books. It can be quite scary to know that not everything that is written is true and that perhaps many of the true stories written by christians could have been erased permanently because of the harsh persecution.

This video discusses the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. The change in culture due to Christianity is one reason pointed out but the biggest reason seems to be the Barbarian invasions. What I thought was interesting was that not only do the Barbarians invade but they exploit the government systems to give them wealth. So, there were Barbarians in Italy that did not destroy the Empire through war and violence but from the inside of the society.

  13. For starters, I didn't know there were various cults. I didn't know there were people like monks that existed in the middle age. I believe I didn't really understand the concept of their existence in time, so in other words, I didn't know this war their time period. I also didn't know about their strict but messy lifestyles.
